“SAGA: The System for Andre’s Great Advantage,” in Systems Development Case Studies, McGraw-Hill, 1998. ISBN: 0-256-27056-2. 

  • This case is about an actual software project to create a database of statistics to help Andre Agassi's tennis game. It highlights the pitfalls of end-user development and prototyping when there is limited communication between the final user and the developers. It also highlights strategic issues; in this case the payoff from a successful system is potentially huge. Case events took place approx. 1991-1993.

 

David vs. Goliath?: Jasons I/T Strategy in the Land of Wal-Mart, Fall, 1994 

  • This case highlights the IT strategy of a discount retailer in the Northeast United States in the face of the coming onslaught of giant Wal-Mart. It highlights both technical and strategic issues, and includes some fictional parts created to illustrate managerial situations. Case events took place in approx. 1994.

 

The Obraz Computing Joint Venture in Russia: Business Development Amidst Chaos, Spring, 1992 

  • This case highlights a computer-importing joint venture in the USSR. The JV must decide whether or not to source some components of the PC locally (in Minsk), and must evaluate the PC market in Russia and the capabilities of the local factory. Some parts of the case are fictional. Case events took place in 1991, before the breakup of the USSR.
