A list of chemicals used in each experiment can be found in the link below. This is not a complete list. Chemicals may be added or deleted. Talk with your instructor if you have any concerns about a particular chemical.

Reagent List

Q.     I forgot my combination. What do I do?

A. Come to the 3rd floor stockroom window. We will look it up for you. You should write your combination in your lab notebook.

Q.     I missed a lab. How do I make it up?

A. That depends. We service more than 2400 students a year. It would be impossible to grant make-ups for every experiment. Limited quantities of reagents are prepared on a "just-in-time" bases to reduce waste and to ensure experiment success. If you need to make up a lab, talk with your instructor. The LAB MAKE-UP FORM must be filled out to make-up a lab.

Q.    Can I get more of my unknown?

A. NO. Everyone is given an equal chance. At the beginning of your lab you will be given a sufficient amount of unknown to complete the experiment. Safeguard your unknown until the lab is complete. If the experiment calls for you to use a specific amount of your unknown, remove a portion as specified. Don't add anything to your entire unknown if the instructions don't call for it.

Q.    Can I switch rooms so I can be next to my friend(s)?

A. NO.

Q.    I forgot my goggles (at home, in my car, at my friends house, my dog ate them, etc...). What do I do?

A. You are not permitted into the laboratory without goggles. You can either go to the bookstore to purchase new goggles or retrieve (from wherever) the goggles we gave you at the beginning of the semester.

Q.    I threw paper towels in the glass trash. Why were points deducted from my lab grade? or I threw glass in the regular trash. Why . . . . .

A. Reading labels and following good housekeeping practices are essential aspects of working safely in the laboratory.

Q.    I left burnt matches in the sink. Why were points deducted from my lab grade?

A. While it is advised to rinse a burnt match in the sink before throwing it into the trash, you shouldn't leave it there. Matches will clog the drain.

Regularly scheduled laboratories take precedence over other activities with only a few exceptions.

LAB MAKE-UP FORM - Laboratory make-ups are given at the discretion of the Instructor of record. For PRIN and GOBC labs the lowest lab score can be dropped. This option will be considered first before a make-up lab is granted. Lab Make-up forms must be filled out with an attached excuse and submitted to the Laboratory Supervisor.

Lab Make-up Rules

  • Dry chemistry labs (e.g. Pattern Observations and Laboratory Measurements)
    • You can make up any dry chemistry lab (for any reason) during your next scheduled lab period.
    • It must be made up during your next scheduled lab period. Therefore, you will have to complete the scheduled experiment for that day and the make-up experiment. Both experiments must be completed within your scheduled lab time. No additional time will be allotted.
    • You only have one chance to make up the lab.
    • If the dry lab occurs during the final instructional week, it cannot be made up.
    • Only one dry lab is eligible for a make-up.
  • Quizzes
    • The Safety quiz can be made up during your next scheduled lab period. You must discuss the Safety Training information with your Teaching Assistant or the Laboratory Supervisor before you take the Safety Quiz.
    •  To make up any other quiz the student must fill out the Lab Make-up form and attach a valid well documented excuse.
  • Wet chemistry labs
    • Option 1: Plan ahead and make-up the lab the same week the experiment is offered (SEE YOUR SYLLABUS for dates when a particular experiment is offered)
      • The student must fill out the Lab Make-up form and attach a valid well documented excuse. The form should be submitted at least three days before the student’s scheduled lab section.
      • A make-up can only be granted if there is sufficient space in another lab section. This fact alone makes it important that you submit the form early.
    • Option 2: Make-up at or near the end of the semester
      • The student must fill out the Lab Make-up form and attach a valid well documented excuse. The form must be submitted no more than three days after the missed lab.
      • A student cannot utilize Option 2 for the last lab of the semester if it occurs during the final instructional week.
      • The make-up lab may or may not entail the experiment that was missed.
      • You can only make-up one lab using Option 2

Reminder: Laboratory make-ups are given at the discretion of the Instructor of record. For PRIN and GOBC labs the lowest lab score can be dropped. This option will be considered first before a make-up lab is granted. Lab Make-up forms must be filled out with an attached excuse and submitted to the Laboratory Supervisor (KNCL-309 or KNCL-315).

What is a VALID excuse?

  • Military service
  • University sanctioned sports event
  • Illness
  • Death in the family
  • Car accident
  • Jury duty
  • Etc…

A valid excuse must be accompanied by written documentation.

What is an INVALID excuse?

  • Oversleeping
  • Getting stuck in traffic
  • Illness without a doctor’s note
  • Going to a seminar or other event
  • Vacation
  • Etc…

2012 Spring Room Assignments

  • See the key at the bottom for color codes.
  • The number in parantheses is the number of vacancies in a particular section.

We take safety very seriously in all of the chemistry labs at the University of Akron. On your first day of lab you will recieve the "Freshman Laboratory Policies and Procedures" document, "Contact Lense Policy", and a pair of goggles.

PDFs of the documents can be found below along with the ACS Lab Safety Guide.

General Chemistry

  • LabQuest Emulator - Allows you to emulate functions and/or control the LabQuest handheld. You don't need the LabQuest to use this software.
  • LoggerPro(update ONLY, to obtain the full MAC or PC version go to the 3rd floor stockroom window) - Data collection & analysis software
  • Periodic Table - It's a periodic table of course
  • ISIS/Draw - Molecular structure drawing package
  • ChemSketch - Molecular structure drawing package
  • Ideal Gas in 3D

Advanced Chemistry

  • DmFit - Enables fitting of solid state (and liquid) NMR spectra, including 1D and 2D datasets
  • Mercury - Crystal structure visualization and exploration
  • Jmol - Molecular Visualization (you need Java and to start it up you double click on the Jmol.jar file)

Desktop & Utilities

  • AVG antivirus - Freeware antivirus software
  • 8Start Launcher - Application launcher. For those of us who still dream of a Mac but use a PC
  • SyncBack - Backup utility. I'll never understand why some people never backup their data
  • WordWeb - Desktop Thesaurus/Dictionary

Applications

  • OpenOffice - The free alternative to Microsoft Office
  • Wink - Allows you to make flash videos of your pc desktop. I used this software to make the tutorials
