EDUCATION - TEACHERS & RESEARCH ADVISORS

I am very grateful for the efforts of my teachers and research advisors!

Mr. Wagner, Mr. Peek (shown above), Mrs. Fox, Miss Minotti (who became Mrs. Wagner, shown above), Mr. Doherty and many others

Champlain Valley Union High School, Hinesburg, Vermont.

I never expected to receive an amazing education at a school that was located next to a cow pasture. The teachers were interesting, knowledgeable and dedicated.

Klaus Wulff (deceased), ACS Project SEED advisor

University of Vermont

Project SEED instilled in me a love of chemistry. I thank graduate students Jim O'Neil and Sue Lee for inspiring me and for putting up with a geeky high school student on a daily basis. Follow the link to see a C&E News article.

University of Vermont (retired)

He and graduate student Paul Shannon mentored my BS research project in organic synthesis.

They both taught me that synthesis should not be viewed as just science. It is an art.

O. Theodore Beachley, Jr.

University at Buffalo (SUNY Buffalo, retired)

Mentored my PhD resarch project: Transition-metal complexes of organoaluminum phosphides

He taught me anaerobic techniques, glassblowing and, most importantly, how to be a good teacher. After being inspired by watching him teach, I started to think that I might want to be a professor at a university .

Northwestern University (retired)

Mentored my postdoctoral project: IR studies of transition-metal clusters on oxide surfaces

Special skills he taught me: Anaerobic techniques (Shriver wrote the book!)
