Hoagy Carmichael songs for the 04/13/05 Song Circle

Here are the stories and songs for Steve's Hoagy Carmichael tribute.  Hoagland Carmichael was not only a great composer and a handsome movie actor, but he was also a nice guy, kind and generous to his friends.  We love Hoagy so much that we named or first cat after him (Hoagy Catmichael).

Frank Loesser songs for the January 2005 Song Circle

In December I read Susan Loesser's biography of her dad, A Most Remarkable Fella  And I received The complete lyrics of Frank Loesser   Read the January Song Circle essay

New and revised lead sheets.  I have an unusual direction for a musician, I work out a lead sheet FIRST, then I learn the tune from the music.  Here are some new and partially finished lead sheets.

Louis Armstrong sang this one ("Lend me your chops for but a second"), but Georgia Gibbs had the hit in 1954.  A Kiss To Build a Dream On

Dorothy Fields was asked to "write a sarcastic love song", one of the few instances where she wrote lyrics before Jerome Kern wrote a great tune. This was featured in "Swing Time", my favorite Fred Astaire / Ginger Rogers movie.   I'd like to sing this as a duet.  A Fine Romance

Antonio Carlos Jobim wrote a love song to be sung to a woman on beaches of a beautiful natural harbor in Rio DeJanero Brazil at the base of Corcovado mountain.  You know the English version.  Can anyone read Portuguese?  Take a look.  I've included the English lyrics too, by Gene Lees.  Corcovado

This is a beautiful Rodgers and Hart song.  It's a love song, of course.  All of Lorenz Hart's lyrics are love songs.  I Didn't Know What Time It Was

Irving Berlin gave this to Fred Astaire to sing to Ginger Rogers (what musical?).  I love the major to minor key changes in Berlin and Cole Porter songs.  A masterpiece:  Let's Face the Music and Dance

People Will Say We're in Love

Johnny Mercer wrote this inspired by his long affair with Judy Garland.  This is a sad song to be sung when the bar closes.  One For My Baby and One More For the Road.

Here's a romantic love song from another Irving Berlin score, "Annie Oakley"  They Say It's Wonderful

Here a great folk song to be sung on piano.  Everybody knows this one  Those Were the Days
