Who am I?

My name is Ryan Brosnahan. I am a senior in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Akron and am nearing completion of a BA in Economics. My goal has been to conclude my undergraduate studies summer 2010 and graduate with a commendable grade point average; I am on track to meet this objective. My interests lie within finance and my economics coursework reflects a balanced understanding of the micro and macro economy as well as a strong base in mathematics, engineering and the sciences. After finishing my undergraduate degree, I plan to begin graduate studies with the expectation of completing a JD, MBA or PhD in Finance. I intend to use my talents and skills as an economist and critical thinker to work in the financial sector as I complete my graduate degree. I'd like to contribute to a company that would eventually allow me to manage a market fund.

Besides successfully completing course work in economics, engineering and mathematics, I have been involved with work and research at the University of Akron for the last five years. In 2006, I was selected to conduct research as part of a University of Akron outreach grant. The resulting research was published in the scientific journal of Applied Biochemistry and Biotechnology. Because of my work ethic and desire to gain professional experience, I was offered and accepted a position as a student research associate, primarily working with a project team of engineers and graduate students tasked with research and production of carbon fiber in the Polymer Science department at the university.

I have worked at The University of Akron in the Polymer Science department for approximately three years. I gained the experience of being an equal and contributing member of a team, have given several talks on technical subjects across campus and throughout the state, interacted with investors and scientists in a professional environment and had the privilege of doing interesting work within one of the most prestigious polymer science departments in the country. The knowledge I gained has certainly enhanced my academic experience. I have also supplemented my income by "day trading" on a part time basis and currently run my own small business buying and selling books while finishing my undergraduate degree.

I am fortunate to have been able to establish work experience and fulfill the requirements of a very heavy academic schedule concurrently. I have tackled challenges that many students do not encounter until after completing an undergraduate degree. Although managing competing priorities and maintaining focus was challenging at times, in my success I demonstrated a strong goal orientation, self-discipline, an unquestionable work ethic and very effective time management skills; attributes I will continue to enhance and perfect as I look to my future with fervor and optimism.
