These represent all of the comments, both good and bad, received in Spring 2007 from every student that has completed the course. This may help you decide whether this class is for you. Some light editing for spelling and the occasional forgotten verb has been done, but in no cases was the students meaning knowingly altered. I did not have to, but would have removed any personal references that could identify any student.
Learned: I took this course as a challenge and I have learnt a great deal studying economics. After taking this course, my whole perception has changed about economics. Earlier, I was of the opinion that economics is purely a science subject and that it caters to all pedantic highly knowledgeable people. Now, I think economics is more like an applied science and that everyone, be it a salesman, or a astronaut should study economics and the concepts would definitely help them achieve greater results in what ever the career they pursue. I am actually unable to ascertain as to whether I should attribute this to the course format or the understandable textbook. I had a great experience learning this subject.
Micro economic concepts provided me the elementary basics of economics. These concepts helped me to understand the macroeconomic principles which are more nearer to the real world scenarios. Studying the text along with the Wall Street Journalís Money and Investing paper provided me an wholesome experience which I would relish for more time. The concepts related to inflation, GDP, unemployment, depository institutions, trading (chapter 33-studied on my own), deficits, monetary and fiscal policies, etc, were very interesting. Knowledge about these concepts helped me gain confidence about what I talk.
Questions: No questions. The opening up of a module (for studying) even when we score 9 helped me a lot.
Comments: I wonder if I would have studied so much in a class room setting. The format of quizzes and my immediate reflection of scores were motivational for me. I could see where actually I stood at the end of every module. I could continuously evaluate my skills and weakness which helped me for a greater understanding of my own self. Overall, the course has a well structured format which is amicable for students.
Recommendations: I thought setting up of a deadline for every module would enable students to be in steady pace. But I thought this may introduce hastiness at the expense of learning.
Learned: I learned the overall basics of Economics. I took Economics at Ohio University and received a D-. This time taking it again, I concentrated on mastering every chapter or tried to master every chapter. I realize that economics is so essential to one's successfulness in running a business. Also I realized that even if one is not in business, it is essential to know about economics to govern one's own financials.
Questions: Elasticity was a hard topic to understand. The Philips curve was another hard topic to understand. Working with the mathematical side was also difficult for me. I think as I take other financial courses, the concepts taught will resurface, then I can deal with them again.
Comments: It thought the class was great. The professor could of been a little faster at opening modules. But overall, I liked the course alot.
Recommendations: I think there should be more video clips with the modules explaining the concepts. Also I believe that the test time limit should be a little longer.
Learned: I have gained a wide base of knowledge in economics which will guide me in my academic and professional life. I will take more courses on economics and may even make it my area of concentration. I've recognized everyday applications from this course. I've been on a house search recently and this course has helped me see this market more clearly.
Questions: The only muddiness comes from lack of repetition. I still have to graph things out to understand them.
Learned: I think that this course offered an excellent survey of basic micro and macro economic concepts. I would strongly recommend it to anyone who is extremely self-motivated, but would steer most students away from a topic such as economics taught online. The instructor answered all questions in a timely, efficient, and concise manner and was easily accessible. Overall, it was a great class for learning basic economic principles for someone who is self-motivated.
Learned: I definitely learned more in economics that I had in previous courses. I learned about the theories of economics and found information specific to the PPF very useful to understanding and bettering my involvement in production planning at my workplace. I also feel that the macroeconomic topics, especially those on unemployment were especially useful, especially given the high unemployment rate in northeast Ohio.
Recommendations: I would have liked to have the course out of more points. If a person ends up missing one on a quiz, they cannot earn an A. Even a curve would have been a little better. As grad school student, we often have many commitments and although every course and piece of coursework is extremely important, I do not believe those of us who really worked hard should have our grade point averages affected by an A- or lower.
Learned: This course has broadened my education in two ways. One that on-line classes are a great way to learn subjects and two that economics effects so many areas. I found myself applying concepts I learned in this course to the Fed news releases and general economic news and indicators.
Questions: I do not have any questions at this time. The course was complete and will provide insight for future use.
Comments: The modules were complete enough to provide details but not too detailed were concepts became difficult to understand. The PowerPoint slides which showed how different factors effect equilibrium helped me visualize the concepts and how factors effect the balance.
Learned: I have learned a lot from this class. This Writing assignment specifically helped me learn about the web sites that actively track the stats for our economy. It was cool to be able look on the web for areas that we learned about throughout the semester. This will definitely effect my thinking in the future as now I can understand what the statistics mean.
Learned: I really enjoyed learning Foundations of Economic Analysis and learnt a great deal out of it. It was just that I was not able to keep up the time, but somehow managed it in the end. I really have to thank you Dr. Myers and Alex, for the help which you have all done for me, in order to get a better understanding about the course.
Learned: This course provided many new points that I did not understand prior to taking it. The most interesting to me is the influence the government can have on the economy. It is beneficial to see the reasons for the economic decisions made by the government. The adjustments to interest rates can play a large role in the entire national economy.
Learned: Not sure if I am supposed to answer about a module, overall or the writing assignment, so I will go with the writing assignment. The difficult part for me was taking all the data and making it into useful information. There was so much out there it was almost too much.
Comments: On the class overall, I think you did an excellent job in organization and communication. Without that, the class would have been much more difficult to navigate. Also, the extra articles, websites or TV shows were a nice way to spice up the class.
Recommendations: To get the students used to posting questions or using the group discussion, would it be advantageous to make posting questions or having a discussion one of the assignments? It might prove difficult though if everyone moves at their own pace, but just an idea.
Learned: From completing this course in Economics I gained a better comprehensive knowledge in the field of Economics. Many of the pertinent subject matters reviewed in this course will greatly assist me within my career being in the field of marketing and sales. In addition, the subject matters covered within the course now allows me to view society, business and government decisions differently in a more educated perspective. More importantly it also allows me to view worldly matters in a different view now compared to before I completed this course.
Questions: I have no questions at this time. Many of the topics, issues, and subject matters have greatly enhanced my knowledge within economics.
Comments: As noted in previous comments, this course allowed me to gain a better understanding and appreciation of the field of economics. Views and perspectives have altered from prior to taking this course.
Learned: One of the main things that I didnít had any idea about is the inflation. An I'm really happy to learn such a thing. Learning the interesting economic methods and theories gave me an acceptable awareness on what's going on around me, or even better to have a slight idea on what may happened in the future.
Comments: I tried to focus in the second writing assignment on the things that interest me the most, and based on what I learned I draw my conclusions. So is my basic economic way of thinking has been improved, am I heading on the right economic thinking way?
Recommendations: Since this is a web based course, I personally gained a lot from the previous student questions, so I think that having more on each module would be a great enhancement
Learned: Interesting writing assignment. The subject area of macroeconomics is very useful and interesting. I like to study macro economics since I form part of the whole economy under macro economic studies.
Comments: I really thought the course was designed well. I like how you have three attempts to take the quizzes. Even though it took awhile it definitely made me more disciplined.
Recommendations: I liked the book and thought it did a great job at presenting the material and the problems really help in reinforcing the concepts. The only thing I did not like was the solutions sometimes were not clear. On some problems, they provided detailed steps on where the input material came from that was used in calculating the answers but other times it would just provide a number with no other information.
I believe this course is helpful with understanding and identifying concepts.
This is a fast paced course. You will gain knowledge of micro and macro economics and will be able to apply that knowledge to the real world quickly.
This course helped me to understand one of the main things that I didnít had any idea about which is inflation. And I'm really happy to learn such a thing. Learning the interesting economic methods and theories gave me an acceptable awareness on what's going on around me, or even better to have a slight idea on what may happened in the future.
I think overall the course is useful and highly recommended to every one who has not had any background in economics. I learnt a lot on macro economics that is very useful to me as part of the economy as a whole. I understood how FED operates and the correct meanings of most items such as GDP that I initially did not know much about. I think every one should consider this class. I also recommend that the course content be reduced.
Economics is a very good subject, which enhances a lot of knowledge and easy understanding about the things happening in the economy. And it is divided into two groups- Microeconomics and Macroeconomics. Both these groups are very interesting depending about your knowledge in it. And more over it was one of my Pre-requisite in MBA program, which required me to take it. And I guess most of the Business school students might have to take this course, and I guess itís very helpful to us all.
The online course is a great option for students. It works well with someone with a busy schedule. You have to be focused and work very hard but the professor will work with you on issues you are having. I took the classroom course in the fall semester and dropped it. I have learned so much more from this type of learning setting.
I wonder if I would have studied so much in a class room setting. The format of quizzes and my immediate reflection of scores were motivational for me. I could see where actually I stood at the end of every module. I could continuously evaluate my skills and weakness which helped me for a greater understanding of my own self. Overall the course has a well structured format which is amicable to the good academic students.
The Economic Graduate course provides real life examples of how economic effects business.
This course is great especially for someone who is also balancing a career. It allows one to complete the course at his/her own pace that fits according to their schedule. The material presented within this Economics course allows one to gain a better understanding of the subject. This may change an individual's perspective in many societal and worldly matters and decisions. Furthermore the subject and topics are organized in a manner that enhances your knowledge as you progress through the course until completion.
This class is good because it is flexible in terms of when and where you want to take it. It is very structured in terms of how you take it. If these conditions apply to you, I strongly suggest you take this economics class.
This online economics class is not for everyone. You should have a comfortable computer setting with a high speed internet connection. You should have an area set up that allows you to relax and focus on the computer.
The course allows you to work at your own pace and for people working 40 hours a week and taking other classes it is really helpful. The professor gets back to you in time so that you do not fall behind. I think I learned more doing it indecently then I did when I took it in my undergraduate class as a lecture.
This is a good course to take. I would not suggest that this be taken in you first or last term. This course requires a lot of dedication and consistency. If you regularly do the modules this should be a piece of cake. However if not then you will find it difficult to finish the cause.
The course consisted of a mastery understanding of the micro and macro level concepts. It is interactive and requires thorough understanding of each chapter before proceeding to the next chapter. One must pace themselves because this course can not be completed in a monthís time and be properly mastered. Take you time on this course and enjoy the economic principles.
