Archaeo-Geophysical Survey

Study Area, Hopewell?

This spring a class by the name of “Subsurface Geophysical Surveying in Archaeology” was offered as a collaboration between three departments at the University of Akron.  This website is the final project for that class.  In it, you will find information about our project area and its geological history, the techniques and equipment we used and our group’s conclusions and recommendations for the site we surveyed.  You will also find links to other sites of interest.

Archaeo-geophysical survey, sometimes called remote sensing or archaeological prospecting, is the application of geophysical technologies such as magnetometry and resistivity to study the archaeologically interesting subsurface.  The depth of interest is often somewhat shallower than that of traditional geological depths under study.

Our primary objective was not to reveal a great number of details about this site but simply to determine whether or not excavations are warranted.  To this end we attempted to locate and identify subsurface anomalies that might further indicate the type and extent of potential cultural delineation.
