Hampton Hills: The Search for Buried Archaeology

Hampton Hills site in the Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area has been studied for historic and prehistoric archaeology for the past several years.  Preliminary fieldwork was conducted in the 2000 field season by Dr. Paul Pacheco.  The results of which suggest that the site is of the Late Prehistoric Whittlesey Phase habitation site.  Linda Whitman, Community Archaeologist, conducted additional fieldwork in 2001, with a group of Metro Park volunteers.

Recommendations from both seasons indicate that further investigation should be conducted to determine the boundaries of the site and suggest that additional hearths or fire pits might be identified.  Linda Whitman suggests that initial geophysical surveying be conducted at the north and east quadrants of the project site.  Evidence also suggests that geophysical surveying would further document a seasonal Whittlesey settlement pattern.

Through the use of geophysical surveying techniques, we propose to determine the site boundaries and identify possible buried archaeological features at the Hampton Hills site.  Computer generated images of the underlying data to interpret the site characteristics.  A website will be created to display our workscope and results to educate teachers, students and enthusiasts as well as contribute to the local historical documentation.
