Archaeological Laboratory Methods (3240:440/540)

This course introduces students to basic laboratory methods for the analysis of archaeological materials. The focus throughout is to provide students with the basic conceptual and practical skills necessary to process artifacts and ecofacts after excavation (including cleaning/conservation, classification and description), create databases and run basic quantitative analyses. In all cases, there is a strong connection made between theory and practice. Specific course content includes: measurement and statistical modeling of archaeological data; ancient materials; artifact conservation and basic laboratory techniques for analyzing lithics, ceramics, paleobotanical and paleofaunal remains, metals, organic artifacts and soils.
