B.A. in Interdisciplinary Anthropology

Anthropology is the study of humanity in its broadest sense. Anthropologists study modern living peoples as well as ancient ones covering the full range of humanity's cultural and physical evolution. The Department of ACS offers an array of courses including introductory survey courses, advanced topical and methods courses, service-based learning and community research courses, and upper division seminars.

General requirements

Students seeking a B.A. in Interdisciplinary Anthropology must complete all the requirements for the University of Akron, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Department of ACS in order to graduate.

The University of Akron requires that you successfully complete 128 credits to receive an anthropology B.A. The last 32 credits must be taken at the University of Akron (i.e., not as transfer credits).

All students must complete the General Education Core Curriculum. This curriculum has 42 credits distributed among eight categories. These categories are: English Composition, Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Oral Communication, Social Sciences, Humanities, Area Studies/Cultural Diversity, and Physical Education. Our department offers courses in Natural Sciences (Human Evolution), Social Sciences (Human Cultures, formerly Cultural Anthropology and Introduction to Archaeology), Humanities (Introduction to the Ancient World, Sports and Society in Ancient Greece and Rome, Mythology of Ancient Greece, Literature of Greece), and Area Studies/Cultural Diversity (Human Diversity).

The College of Arts and Sciences requires that you successfully complete 47 credits of 300-/400-level courses. Note that courses in the General Education program do not count towards this requirement, even if they are 300-/400-level courses. (This includes Literature of Greece 3200:361 which does not count towards your 47 required credits).

The Department of ACS requires that you complete a series of Core courses common to all anthropology students. These core courses total 16 credits. Additionally, you are required to complete 21 credits chosen from among a wide range of elective courses (see the Student worksheet link for a listing of possible electives). The total number of credits required for the major is 37. Note that 300-/400-level courses taken as part of your anthropology major also count towards the 47 credits of upper-division courses required by the College of Arts and Sciences.

Double majors are required to successfully complete 160 credits, as well as satisfying the major requirements of each Departmental program of study. For a double major, students must also take 63 credits at the 300-/400-level.
