2006 -
present Director, Department
of Instructional Services, Information Technology Services, The University of
Akron. Provide leadership, vision and oversight to four units (30 staff plus
GA’s and SA’s) that support the effective integration and utilization of instructional
technologies by faculty and students at the University.
2006 -
present Associate Professor,
Department of Educational Foundations and Leadership, College of Education, The
University of Akron, Akron OH. Provide advice and support for new faculty in
the IT Masters degree program and contribute to program revisions, program
reviews and teach at least one course per year.
2000-2006 Assistant
Professor, Department of Educational Foundations and Leadership, College of
Education, The University of Akron, Akron OH. Design, develop and teach
graduate courses in the Masters in Instructional Technology program, and
undergraduate courses in educational technology. Research interests include the
design of on-line learning environments, technology integration in teaching and
learning, and methods for evaluating and enhancing student ownership for
learning.
1996-2000 Lead
Instructional Application Designer, DePaul University, Chicago IL. The Academic
Technology Development (ATD) group supported faculty efforts to design and
develop pedagogically sound instruction that effectively incorporated
instructional technologies. My role was to mentor the design, development, and
implementation of these technologically enhanced instructional environments.
1996-2000 Adjunct
Faculty, Computer Science,
Telecommunications and Information Systems (CTI), DePaul University, Chicago
IL. I created a Survey of Computer Technology course and taught nine sections
(over 340 students). Other instructors adopted the instructional
strategies and web-based resources developed for this course.
1996-2000 Adjunct
Faculty, School of Education, DePaul
University, Chicago IL. I taught graduate courses in research methods and
curriculum development in the Teaching and Learning program. I also
created and taught a course on Microcomputers in Education for pre-service and
in-service teachers. In the summer of 1999, this course oversubscribed and was
split into two sections of 30 each. I also taught a course on Quantitative
Reasoning for first year students.
1995-1996 Senior
Instructional Designer, DLS Group
Inc. Denver, CO.
While with DLS I designed and implemented the capstone experience of
an integrated training program for National Association of Security Dealers
(NASD) Examiners. The Examiners Workshop was a week long, tutor facilitated,
authentic case that teams of Examiners attempted to solve by applying the
analytical and investigative techniques acquired through earlier OJT and CBT
activities. (Instructor's manual and training sessions)
1993-1995
Graduate Student, Indiana University, Bloomington.
·
Project coordinator for two iterations of a 12-week
ISD training program for managers from the Lucky-Goldstar Group of Korea.

1991-1992
Instructional Design Consultant, J.R.S. Training Services, Calgary, AB.
As an independent
consultant I contracted with Digital Equipment of Canada Ltd. to conduct a
Training Needs Analysis for end-users of a computerized banking application. As
a member of a federally funded research team with LCS Health Choices Inc.,
Calgary, I assisted in the design, development, and evaluation of a simulation
for high school students to model the transition from school to the workplace.
1990-1991
Director, ACTC
Institute of Computing Studies, Calgary, AB.
As Director my
responsibilities included management of three staff, 14 contract instructors,
budget control, marketing, liaison with the Private Vocational Schools
Department, and supervision of adult learners in the program. I also designed
and taught components of an active learning curriculum that included new and
updated courses.
1988-1990
Instructional Developer, Customized Training Services, Digital Equipment of Canada Ltd.,
Toronto, ON and Calgary, AB.
As an internal
consultant my responsibilities included defining business opportunities,
meeting with customers, giving presentations, and writing proposals. Projects I
completed included a Training Needs Assessment of B.C. Rail's Information
Systems department in Vancouver, and co-management of a Knowledge Engineering
Apprenticeship program in Edmonton; a joint venture between Digital Equipment
and Alberta Government Telephone.
1988
Training Consultant, Calgary, AB.
As an independent
consultant I contracted with Shell Canada Ltd. to develop recommendations
(later implemented) for re-organization of a combined applications development
and end-user support group. Concurrently, I completed a contract with Alberta
Agriculture to develop lessons for a program to introduce Farm Financial
Record-Keeping Systems to farmers in rural Alberta.
1985-1988
Instructional Designer/Developer, Institute for Computer Assisted
Learning (ICAL), The University of Calgary, Calgary, AB.
As a member of the ICAL team I
provided instructional design and development support for Institute projects
and developed funding proposals. Specific projects completed included a
computer based English as a Second Language (ESL) diagnostics program, an
interactive videodisk program on safety awareness for the Alberta Gas Ethylene
Co., and a computer managed career and life-style simulation program for
Alberta Education. This latter project (Life Choices Simulation) received the
AMTEC Award of Merit and was made part of Alberta's compulsory Career and Life
Management curriculum. I represented the Canadian Center for Learning Systems
(CCLS) on a Department of External Affairs sponsored trade mission to Japan and
Hong Kong (1987).
