Personal Information:

I entered the University of Iowa as a music major in 1962, changed major area of study to speech pathology and audiology after one year.  However, I  continued playing in the Hawkeye marching band for four years.  The United States Army called me into active duty immediately after I had earned an audiology Masters degree in 1969;  and, I enjoyed two years as an EENT medic at Ft. McClellan, Alabama.  Alabama was, after all, preferable to Viet Nam.  After military service, I entered the Ph.D. program at the University of Iowa.  They finally kicked me out with a doctoral degree in 1975, and I went to work as an assistant professor of audiology at The Ohio State University.  My good friend and colleague, Sharon Lesner, invited me to interview at The University of Akron in 1980.  Apparently, it was a good match because I have been here since that time.  Northeast Ohio is a wonderful place to live, very rich in all forms of entertainment.  After all, how much more fortunate can one be than to live within an hour's drive of the Cleveland Orchestra!

I became Interim Director of the School of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology in 1990, and faculty were kind enough to make it an official appointment in 1992.  In Summer of 2000, I was called to serve as Associate Dean of the College of Fine and Applied Arts.  In December 2006 I was appointed Interim Dean of the College of Fine and Applied Arts.  Then, after some reorganization, as the Interim Dean of the College of Health Sciences and Human Services.

I retired officially on July 1, 2011 and came back to work part time to help in formation of what will be the College of Health Professions.

I am blessed with a wonderful immediate family.  Karen and I have been married since 1988, and we have one wonderful daughter, Kathryn Marie.  The picture on the left is a few of years old.   Kathryn looks a little older, now;  but, Karen and I look the same as in the picture (no older, of course).    And, because I think you ought to be interested, I included some more pictures of Kathryn.

By the way, Kathryn is a freshman in Nursing at......guess where....the University of Akron.

Here's one of my favorite, from a recent trip to Florida.

Four of Kathryn's Senior Pictures

Besides enjoying time with my family, I keep busy enough with golf and working around the house and yard.   I've thoroughly enjoyed playing with The University of Akron Tuesday evening golf league for the past thirty years.  Also, I recently returned to one of my first loves, the playing of low brass instruments, now mainly the euphonium and sometimes trombone.  Once in a while, they invite me to contribute special music during a church service, and I've enjoyed playing in Tuba Christmas and Tuba Summer concerts.  Recently, I joined the Summit County MetroParks Ensemble.  We play concerts each Tuesday evening during summer months.

Oh, I guess I'd be remiss if I didn't show you a couple more pictures of Kathryn, two of my favorites.  The sunflower picture was taken when she was about 2 years old.  The other is from a couple of years later..  She now has all her front teeth and several thousand dollars worth of orthodontia (as you can see in the Senior Pictures, above).
