Materials:

§         listening map

§         recording of The Stars and Stripes Forever

§         computer

§         projector

§         recording of the second movement of Haydn’s Symphony No. 94 in G Major

§         CD player

§         small poster board and art supplies for each group

Procedure:

(10 minutes)  Begin the listening map activity by introducing John Philip Sousa.  Give information on his life and the discuss some of the marches that he composed.  Tell about the history of The Stars and Stripes Forever and its significance in music history.

(15 minutes)  Play The Stars and Stripes Forever and the listening map as the students follow along.  After they have heard the recording, discuss the different concepts presented in the listening map.  Ask students to comment on the different sounds that they heard and if they can think of other pieces that they have heard in previous lessons that use one or more of these concepts.

(25 minutes)  Divide the class into three groups of five.  Assign each group one of the following concepts: dynamic contrast, stylistic contrast, and timbre/use of different instruments.  Play the second movement of Haydn’s Symphony No. 94 in G Major for the entire class several times (once as they just listen, then continue to play it while they work).  Ask each group to identify an example of their concept in the piece, and then to decide on a way to illustrate this concept visually, similar to a listening map.  Have each group create a visual aid and then present it to the class.

Assessment:  Informal assessment of groups based on each group’s visual aid and presentation.
