Grade: 3rd Primary Concepts: Solfege, Curwen hand signs Objective: The student will sing Little Peter Rabbit with accurate pitches and rhythms while using the correct Curwen hand signs and a good vocal tone quality. Prerequisite Knowledge: The students will already be familiar with solfege syllables and Curwen hand signs. Materials: Little Peter Rabbit – pg. 68, Come on Everybody, Let’s Sing! by Lois Birkenshaw-Fleming (transposed to D Major for this lesson) Procedure: (5 minutes) Class will begin with attendance through a pitch matching exercise. (2 minutes) The class will chant the words and rhythm of each phrase of Little Peter Rabbit by echoing the teacher. (2 minutes) Students will warm up and review hand signs by singing a D Major scale ascending and descending using hand signs. (15 minutes) The students will learn each phrase of Little Peter Rabbit on solfege. When the students can sing the entire song accurately with solfege syllables, the hand signs can be added by phrase. (2 minutes) The class will link all phrases and sing the entire song using accurate solfege syllables and hand signs. (4 minutes) The students will review the words and rhythms by chanting the entire song, then chanting again adding the hand signs. (2 minutes) The class will conclude with a performance Little Peter Rabbit using words and hand signs. Assessment: Informal embedded assessment of the group based on accurate pitches and correct hand signs. |
