Midwest Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics Conference
The Midwest Thermo conference is an annual meeting held at various locations ranging from Buffalo and Pittsburg to Minneapolis and Columbia(MO). A list of past locations and chairs is tabulated below. This conference provides a forum for researchers in all aspects of thermodynamics and statistical mechanics, theoretical and experimental, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Chemistry, and Physics. A particular focus of the meeting is for graduate students, post-docs, and junior faculty to present their work.

2006 Midwest Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics Conference
The following material pertains to the 2006 Midwest Thermodynamics and Statistical Mechanics Conference. The discussion of perfluorocarbons is intended to give an idea of one topic to be discussed, with pictures to illustrate the central role of molecular perspective. A broader range of perspectives can be viewed in the Conference Program.

Perfluorocarbons (like Teflon) exhibit behavior that is difficult to explain. Left figures show primitive sketches. Right figures show MNDO optimized conformations. The large fluorine atoms twist the backbone to pack more efficiently and make the backbone rigid. Between molecules, a weak interaction potential at short range can explain their low cohesion with surfaces and alkanes. |

Confirmed Participants: Jeff Potoff, Dept. of Chemical Engineering, Wayne State Univ. Important Dates Registration Please register for the conference by May 05, 2006.
download the registration form (the mailing address and fax number are
included on the form). The registration fee is $50.00 for students and postdocs and $90.00 for faculty without accommodations or $100 for students and postdocs and $150 for faculty with accommodations included in our new honors dormitory. We have no support for subsidizing the student travel at this time. Abstract Submission To be considered for a presentation at the
meeting, please submit an abstract by May 02, 2005. Your abstract should include a title, author list, author affiliations, and an abstract configured to fit on a single page. Please email a MS Word document of your abstract to Richard Elliott ( elliot1@uakron.edu ).
In your email, please be sure to include contact information for the
corresponding author and indicate which of the authors will be the speaker. If the number of abstracts that are submitted
is greater than what can be accommodated, a poster session may be scheduled. Meeting Program and Information The conference will be held in the Goodyear Auditorium. We will all be on our own for meals, but the student center is nearby along with
restaurants. Click here for a map of local restaurants near campus. The conference will be held in a lecture hall
that is equipped with a computer that broadcasts to an LCD projector. Laptops
may also be connected and broadcast to the LCD projector. Presenters can either
use the local computer or bring their personal laptops for presentations. The
local computer is also connected to the internet. An overhead projector will
also be available. Finally, a microphone and laser pointer will be provided.

If you prefer to stay somewhere else, the Quaker Crowne Plaza is very close to campus. Check in: 3:00 pm; Check out: 1:00 pm The dorm room costs are
included in the registration fee if you choose that option.
If you need help with a room, please contact the
conference organizer for a list of other hotels in the area. Travel Information If you are flying into the Cleveland (CLE)
Airport, limo service is available from the airport to the Quaker Crowne Plaza. Fares are ~$25 one-way, $40 for round trip. Please see the website (http://www.gohopkins.com/) for contact information and a schedule of departure times. Travel time between Akron and the CLE Airport is around one hour. Travel from the Canton/Akron airport (CAK) can be arranged at the same website and requires roughly 50 minutes.
