Electronic Communication

All class information and assignments will be posted on this or (for the Problem Supplement) another Website.  You should be comfortable enough with Web "surfing" to navigate through any Website, find what you want, save it on your hard drive and, if necessary, print it out.  Please be sure to check this Website at least 24 hours before each class for changes in the class schedule or assignments.

All of your written exercises will be submitted and (after markup and grading) returned to you as e-mail attachments.  You should know how to attach word-processing documents to (and retrieve and save them from) e-mail messages.  In addition, some time-critical or urgent messages may be sent by e-mail.

During the first class session, you will be asked to submit one or more e-mail addresses for communication in this course.  (You may submit multiple addresses if you wish.)  You should check your designated e-mail for messages pertaining to this course at least twice per week, including once on the day before each class.

Attendance and Class Participation

This is not a course for "back benchers."  What you get out of it will depend strongly on your attendance and diligent preparation.  Accordingly, regular attendance, good preparation, and participation in class discussions will be mandatory and will account for 30% of your grade.

The "class peformance" component of your grade will depend upon both the quality and quantity of your class participation.  It will also depend upon both your voluntary contributions and your contributions when called upon.

No more than twice during the semester, you may excuse yourself from class discussion and nevertheless attend class.  You may exercise this option only by giving give me an "unprepared" note before class.  Please use a full page for each such note.  (Little slips of paper may get lost.)  Each note should include: (1) your printed name, (2) the date, (3) the words "I pass" or "unprepared," and (4) your signature.

Evaluation of Your Performance

Your grade in this course will be based on two components, as follows:
    1.  Your attendance, preparation, and classroom performance  30%; and
    2.  Your composite score on a series of graded exercises  70%.
The graded exercises will consist of seven individual writing assignments and one team-based oral argument.  The relative weight of the different assignments will be announced.  In some cases, the weight might not be announced until a short time before the assignment.  Generally speaking, the license-drafting exercises toward the end of the semester will be weighted more heavily.  Please note that deadlines for all work must be strictly observed and will be waived or modified only under extraordinary circumstances.
