My posting
and replies from YOKWE.NET re: Cholera have expired.
You can
go to the Health forum, however.
This is just a brief description of strategies for dealing with the disease. Please do real research and don't rely solely on what Keola and I have said. We attempted to make these tips easy enough for people of limited education, reading ability and medical experience to follow. (Note: most of the RMI is literate.) The following message was posted for the benefit of readers on December 27th, 2000.
Yokwe,
I spent the summer of '91 working as a health
volunteer in Mexico while much
of Latin America suffered a cholera epidemic.
Hopefully it won't spread. If
people boil or treat their water with a little
iodine or chlorine, they should
avoid catching it. Any seafood should be cooked
very well. People should
wash with plenty of soap if caring for someone
sick. Their waste is highly
contaminated.
"Most antibiotics and chemotherapeutic agents
have no value in cholera
therapy" (U.
of Wisc.) . With rehydration and care, almost everyone recovers.
Most people can tolerate oral rehydration.
There are numerous prescription
medicines, Pedialyte is good, and sports drinks
like Gatorade also work. You
can also make a rehydration solution (U.N.
Formula). It doesn't taste very
good, but will keep fluid levels up.
--------Homemade Rehydration solution-------------
ORS consists of four constituents,
which are dissolved in one litre of
CLEAN drinking-water:
· Sodium chloride (salt): 3.5 grams.
· Trisodium citrate, dihydrate or sodium hydrogen carbonate (sodium
bicarbonate - baking soda): 2.9 grams.
· Potassium chloride: 1.5 grams.
· Glucose (sugar) 20 grams.
Warning: don't overdo the salt!!!!!
