The Rules
Campaign Simulation
Campaign Management 1
Fall 2009
Dr. Coffey

Students in Campaign Management I are divided into groups. These groups compete for the votes of students in Government and Politics.

You will be running a campaign for the President

The election will be Thursday November 5th.

The official start date of the campaign will be September 18th.

There will be 3 groups. Each C.M. group nominates a candidate.

A home page for the simulation may be designed by the students and each group may post campaign material with links to other pages in its frame.

Each team will be given 5 minutes per week of G&P class time to make public statements and personal appeals.

Role of GNP Students
GNP students participate in 4 ways:
Contributing their allotted 100 campaign dollars
Voting for the candidates
Participating in polls
Listening to candidates, volunteers work and reading campaign emails
Undergraduates may receive extra-credit for volunteering for one of the campaigns. Undergraduates are not, however, to be considered “free labor”. Each campaign should report the names of volunteers to me.

Financial Rules
Each GNP student receives 100 campaign dollars
GNP students are NOT required to donate money
Each Campaign begins with a budget of $50 CM dollars
The cost of an email or any electronic commutation with a student is $5.
The cost of a poll is $100. Polls may not include more than 15 students.
The cost of an ad is $300
Outside assistance (such as help with a website or commercial) will cost $100.
The creation of a Facebook or other page is free. Posts on student pages are $5 each.

All contributions must be posted on a campaign finance report, which will be turned into to me. You must include the name, email, and amount of the contribution.

Teams must maintain an up to date campaign finance report as prescribed by the instructor. All campaign activities must be conducted within the allotted resources. Each campaign may select one personal expense, such as buttons, food, flyers, t-shirts, etc., to distribute to students.

Emails and communications may be sent for one of three purposes.
Polling
Fundraising
Campaigning

Polling should be distinct from campaigning. In other words, polls should not contain campaign information.

Campaign Management students are graded primarily on participation. Since this is a group project, each group member is allowed to judge all other group members’ participation. The instructor will also judge participation. There will be a reward for winning.
