Zipping files tutorial:

Winzip is a utility that lets you compact a file or set of files into a single .zip file which is very handy for emailing.  The software should be installed already on most University computers and you can obtain an evaluation copy from http://www.winzip.com .  The steps for it’s use if it properly installed are:

  • Right click on the folder that you want to zip (for example a folder named ‘tutorial’ containing a ChemCAD simulation)
  • From the drop down menu select either “add to zip” or “add to tutorial.zip” (depending on how winzip was installed this second option may appear on a submenu of the “add to zip” entry or it may appear as one of the options when you right click on the folder
  • Agree to the evaluation terms when Winzip opens (feel free to read the legal agreement if you’d like)
  • If you used the “add to tutorial.zip” menu entry you’re done; Winzip will create the tutorial.zip file and exit
  • If you used the “add to zip” menu entry you’ll be prompted for a .zip file name (called an archive); after you’ve supplied one the Winzip program window will show the files from the folder that it’s storing and you can exit
  • Check your .zip file by double clicking on it and verifying that all the files from your ChemCAD simulation are there.

Reading PDF files:

To view the pdf files you'll need the Adobe Acrobat viewer. If it's not already installed on your computer, it is available online at: http://www.adobe.com/prodindex/acrobat/readstep.html

Some browser installations will not properly open the pdf files even with Acrobat installed and instead just show a blank page where the lecture notes (or other pdf material) should be.  If this is the case, download the lecture (or other pdf material) to a local drive (for ChE machines the “S” drive is probably the best choice) and open it directly from there by double clicking on the downloaded filename.  You can download the file in Internet Explorer by clicking the right mouse button while pointing at the file and selecting the “save target as” option.
