SciFinder includes the Chemical Abstracts and Medline databases as well as additional information:
Windows users may access SciFinder with
client software or on the
Web. Macintosh users should use the
Web version. SciFinder is limited to use by
current University of Akron students, staff, and faculty. If you receive the message that there are too many concurrent sessions for this login id, please try to sign on again a little later. If you receive any other error message, please contact Ann Bolek at
bolek@uakron.edu or ext. 6264.
Client Software | Web Version | RefWorks | EndNote, ProCite, Reference Manager | Off-Campus Access | Spectral Data
The software is available for
download to Windows (2000, XP, or Vista) computers. Enter your
UAnet ID and
Password when prompted for a User Name and Password, and after clicking on the "download" link. Version 2007 is the current version.
In order to use the Web version of SciFinder, you need to register first.
E-mail Ann Bolek for the instructions on how to register. The Web version has most of the features of the client version. In addition, you may sign up for alerts through the
Keep Me Posted feature. Be sure to sign out (upper-right hand corner) when you are finished so that others may sign on. Currently, only one person at The University of Akron may sign onto the Web version at a time.
References from SciFinder may be imported into
RefWorks, which The University of Akron now licenses.
RefWorks may be used to create your own personal database, manage your references, and/or create bibliographies. You should
save your answers from SciFinder in the
Tagged Format (*.txt).
- Log into RefWorks, or create an account if you are a first-time user.
- Select References, then Import from the toolbar.
- Select CAS SciFinder as the data source and CAPlus as the database.
- Browse to find the text file you saved from your SciFinder search, single-click on the filename, then click the "Open" button; for the client version, the default drive and directory are C:\SFSCHLR.
- Click Import. Your records should appear in the Last Imported Folder.
My instructions for using RefWorks with SciFinder may be downloaded
here. Additional instructions for using RefWorks are available on the
RefWorks Help page, the Help Menu after you sign on to
RefWorks, and the
tutorial.
References from SciFinder may be exported to
EndNote,
ProCite, or
Reference Manager with the appropriate
filter.
SciFinder may be used from off-campus by
dialing into the university with your Windows or Macintosh computer. If you are using RoadRunner or a non-University of Akron Internet provider, you should install the
Virtual Private Network (VPN). After installation, connect to your Internet provider, start the VPN (which prompts you for your UAnet ID and Password), then start SciFinder or open your Web browser.
Nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared, and mass spectral data are now available in SciFinder for many substances. Search for your chemical substance by name, Registry Number, molecular formula, or structure. After obtaining your results, click on the microscope (client version) or the registry number (Web version), then the "Experimental Properties" link, then the "See spectrum" link for the particular spectrum in which you are interested. Your Web browser should open and display the spectral image.
