The word, polymer, is derived from the Greek, where "poly" means "many" and "meros" means "part." Polyethylene, also known as polyethene, from the above cited Wikipedia page:

The "n" denotes that the part inside the parentheses is repeated, but "n" is sometimes designated by an "x" instead. So, the formula for polyethylene may be written as (C2H4)x or (H2C=CH2)x. Chemical Abstracts reserves the "n" for polymers that are registered as structural repeating units (SRUs), such as nylon 6, nylon 66, polyethylene glycol, polypropylene glycol, and polyethylene terephthalate. But, most polymers are named and registered in terms of the monomer(s) from which they were polymerized (prepared).
