If you have a citation already, then you probably want to know if The University of Akron owns the publication or provides electronic access to it. There is a good chance that the journal name is abbreviated, as in the following citation:
Zhang, D.; McConville, D. B.; Hrabusa, J. M.; Tessier, C. A.; Youngs, W. J. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 1998, 120, 3506.
where 1998 is the year, 120 is the volume, and 3506 is the first page of the article. You may do a title search on the UA Libraries Catalog (ZipLINK) to see if we have the journal, but the abbreviated journal name, J. Am. Chem. Soc. in this case, is not usually searchable in the UA Libraries Catalog. At this point, you have a few choices:
- Search the OhioLINK Library Catalog by the abbreviated name and check to see if The University of Akron has any holdings or if there is a link to the OhioLINK Electronic Journal Center.
- Try to guess the full name of the journal, Journal of the American Chemical Society in this case, and either search the UA Libraries Catalog by the full name of the journal or go directly to the shelf in the Science-Technology Library and hope that the journal and the year you need are there. In the UA Libraries Catalog, you shall see the following screen:

The holdings show that the year 1998 from the above citation is available in paper format in the Science-Technology Library as well as online. The location "Science Periodical" means that the journal is shelved alphabetically in the Science-Technology Library. Volume 42 (1920) through Volume 124 Issue 32 (2002) is bound and located to the right as you enter the library; subsequent issues are in the glass-enclosed, current periodicals room to the left of the entrance and not yet bound. Click on the "Latest Received" link to see which issues have been received recently. This link will also indicate whether any issues are at the bindery or otherwise unavailable. Bound journals beginning with the letter "A" through "Journal of the Chemical Society. Faraday" are located on the main floor. "Journal of the Chemical Society. Perkin" through the letter "Z" is located upstairs on the mezzanine. Proceedings and transactions are shelved by call number with the circulating books on the ground floor.
- Look up the full name in CASSI (Chemical Abstracts Service Source Index), or on the Web in Core Journals Covered in CAplus or All That JAS: Journal Abbreviation Sources. CASSI is kept at the Reference Desk in the Science-Technology Library and is far more comprehensive than the core journal list.
- Browse the list of Selected Electronic Scientific Journals on my Web pages alphabetically. Please note: this list is out-of-date and far from complete.
- Browse the journals on the OhioLINK Electronic Journal Center alphabetically. Limited to what OhioLINK provides on the Electronic Journal Center, but includes approximately 5,200 journals as of May 2003. Does not necessarily include what The University of Akron provides locally.
- Search the OhioLINK Electronic Journal Finder. Includes many of the full-text journals in the OhioLINK databases, such as Academic Search Premier, as well as the OhioLINK Electronic Journal Center. Searchable by keyword or browsable. Does not necessarily include what The University of Akron provides locally.
- If you have a citation from SciFinder Scholar or another database, there is a good chance that it includes an ISSN (International Standard Serial Number), as in the following example:
Zhang, Daming; McConville, David B.; Hrabusa, Joseph M. III; Tessier, Claire A.; Youngs, Wiley J. Synthesis of Titanium Cyclynes Cp2Ti(OBET) and Cp*2Ti(OBET) and the Unusual Stability of the Bimetallic Complex Ni[Cp2Ti(OBET)] to CO and O2. Journal of the American Chemical Society (1998), 120(14), 3506-3507. CODEN: JACSAT ISSN:0002-7863. CAN 128:217489 AN 1998:229573 CAPLUS
You may search the UA Libraries Catalog or the OhioLINK Library Catalog by the ISSN, 0002-7863 in this case, to determine the journal's availability.
If you cannot find the article using the methods above, you have the following options:
- Ask a Librarian for help either online or via e-mail.
- Ask for help at the Reference Desk in either Bierce Library or the Science-Technology Library.
- Request the article from Interlibrary Loan via ILLiad. You need to be a current University of Akron student, staff, or faculty member to use this service.
- In Science Citation Index, click on the OLinks button
in the upper right-hand corner, after clicking on the title link to see the abstract. - In other OhioLINK databases, click on the OLinks button
and/or the "Find a Copy" link. These links should not only provide a link to the full-text if it is available, but also search The University of Akron Libraries Catalog to determine if there are any other holdings or electronic access. - In SciFinder Scholar, you may click on the computer icon
to connect to ChemPort.

The ChemPort page provides a link called ZipLINK/OhioLINK, as well as a separate link to the publisher's Web site:
| |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
We have access to most of our electronic journals on the OhioLINK Electronic Journal Center (EJC), and so clicking on the ZipLINK/OhioLINK link would be a good guess for accessing the full-text, although there are exceptions where the full-text is available at the publisher's Web site, both places, or neither place. We have access to the journals published by American Chemical Society at the publisher's Web site, and the ChemPort page will often provide the name of the publisher on the left-hand side. The ZipLINK/OhioLINK link in ChemPort opens the OLinks Web page, similar to the OLinks/Find a Copy link from the OhioLINK databases, and will also search the UA Libraries Catalog for any holdings:

If there is no computer icon next to the citation in SciFinder Scholar, you may still try to access the full-text and/or holdings by clicking on the box which precedes the title you want, and then clicking on the Full Text button at the top of the software.
